The 10 best movies set in Cambodia

The 10 best movies set in Cambodia

Today’s blog post is from Phnom Penh cinema buff and film critic, Niall Crotty. Niall has been living in Cambodia for more than five years where he runs the Empire bar, restaurant, and movie house.
Film was once a hugely important and respected medium in Cambodia, with no less than King Norodom Sihanouk himself writing, directing and starring in too many movies to mention during the 50s and 60s. After the devastation of the Khmer Rouge period, cinema is making a comeback in Cambodia with new multi-screen movie theaters, 3D and 4D screens, and even a Cambodian Oscar nomination. But there have been international productions throughout the intervening years that have been set in, or have used Cambodia as part of their story. Here are some that you should be watching.
The Killing Fields movie
The Killing Fields is based on the story of two journalists’ experiences during the Khmer Rouge era, Cambodian Dith Pran and American Sydney Schanberg.

The Killing Fields (1984)

The quintessential movie to see about Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge period. The film, while covering the effects of Pol Pots dictatorship concentrates on the real story of friendship between American journalist Sydney Schanberg and his Cambodian translator Dith Pran. If you see one movie about Cambodia, make it this one.
(The Empire screens The Killing Fields every day in Phnom Penh, at 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:30 p.m. on weekends)

Swimming to Cambodia (1987)

Jonathan Demme directed this filmed version of Spalding Gray’s monologue, covering his trip to Southeast Asia to create the role of the U.S. Ambassador’s aide in The Killing Fields movie. Though essentially an hour and a half of a one-man monologue, Gray’s witty stories are mesmerizing and very funny and make the film a very enjoyable if unusual watch.

Lord Jim (1965)

This adaptation of the Joesph Conrad novel was perhaps the first big foreign film to be made in Cambodia and features several scenes set amongst the temples of Angkor. Production was beset by problems throughout, leaving star Peter O’Toole to describe the experience of filming in Cambodia as “sheer hell.” The real Dith Pran, one of the main characters of The Killing Fields actually served as a translator during production.
Same Same But Different movie
Same, Same But Different is the true story of Benjamin Prüfer’s unconventional romance with a Cambodian woman.

Same Same But Different (2009)

The true story of Benjamin Prüfer and Sreykeo Solvan, a backpacker and a bar girl who find love in Cambodia against the odds. This German-made film (in a mixture of German, English and Khmer with subtitles) stars David Kross of The Reader fame. A compelling love story with some great shots of modern Cambodia this film received a mixed response locally after the casting of Thai leading lady Apinya Sakuljaroensuk as Cambodian Sreykeo.

Two Brothers (2004)

French director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s family adventure movie set in French Colonial 1920s Cambodia features Guy Pearce, but its main stars are two tiger brothers, who get separated as cubs and go on to very different fates before being re-united. An old fashioned and charming adventure story, this movie features beautiful cinematography and amazing use of its animal stars. One for all the family.
City of Ghosts movie Cambodia
The plot may be lacking, but City of Ghosts offers some beautiful shots of Phnom Penh before development started.

City of Ghosts (2002)

Matt Dillon, bewitched by the seedier side of Cambodia after several visits, wrote directed and starred in this attempt at modern noir set in a gritty early nineties Phnom Penh. Roping in Hollywood buddies, James Caan and Gérard Depardieu amongst others, the film also features several well known expat and Khmer faces in supporting cameo roles. Not a fantastic movie by any stretch, but interesting to see how much Phnom Penh has changed in 10 years and if nothing else for the strange pleasure of seeing James Caan speaking, and indeed singing, in Khmer!

Wish You Were Here (2012)

This recent Australian drama follows four friends whose Cambodian holiday takes a very dark path, and then the after-effects of this on their lives back in Australia. Joel Edgerton leads the cast in this edgy but gripping mystery thriller. While featuring a great deal of Cambodia, it doesn’t leave best impression of the country (the fact that they specifically label some of the movies bad guys as Vietnamese gangsters isn’t really enough of a get-out clause). But it’s worth a look as a compelling modern mystery with some impressive performances.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

The film that first brought Angelina Jolie to Cambodia, this video game adaptations features lengthy action sequences filmed around Angkor and particularly Ta Prohm. While not a hit with a lot of critics, the movie was a huge box office success and has led to several sequels (though no more using Cambodian backdrops). Tomb Raider was a huge deal for tourism (many still reference this film when exploring the temples) and while it’s nothing special, it’s actually a hugely fun adventure romp in which the stars are clearly aware of the silliness and seem to be running with it.
The Missing Picture movie
The Missing Picture tells one man’s story of the Khmer Rouge era in an entirely different way.

The Missing Picture (2013)

When this movie from seasoned French-Khmer director Rithy Panh got nominated in the shortlist of the Academy Awards Best Foreign Film category, many were surprised. It’s the first such nomination ever for Cambodia and given the lack of much home-grown film-making in the country, really ushers in a new era for Khmer filmmakers. Rithy, who has been quietly making films in the Kingdom for decades, based this part-documentary, part-clay figure animation on his own story during the Pol Pot era. It’s a melancholy meditation on loss and reflection and a worthy watch for those who want to explore the subject of that era beyond The Killing Fields.

The Gate (2014)

Based on the memoir of the same name by François Bizot, this French language movie has not yet received a general release but it is imminent. The only Westerner to have survived imprisonment by the Khmer Rouge, Bizot’s story is likely to be a compelling one. The movie was filmed in the Kingdom, mainly in Battambang, during early 2014.

Aok Sokunkanha (ឱក សុគន្ធកញ្ញា)

Aok Sokunkanha (ឱក សុគន្ធកញ្ញា)

Date of birth: September 14, 1987
12-copy-217x300
“Aok Sokunkanha is a singer, but a singer is not Aok Sokunkanha because Aok Sokunkanha can do more than a singer does” is a statement raised firstly by one of her biggest fans and then used by others. Why does such statement come to existence? The answer is simply because there are various adjectives needed to describe her. Being smart, flexible, initiative, hard-working, honest, persevered , talented, generous, reasonable, optimistic, strong, young, pretty, lovely, friendly, self-developed, and a lot more are all about Aok Sokunkanha. A common question often appears asking why this girl is that talented and the answer should be because of her merit and being born in a family which is deep-rooted in art.
Aok Sokunanha, a first-line singer in Hang Meas production, was born in Chamka Mon commune in Phnom Penh city on September 14, 1986 (1987 based on other sources) in Phnom Penh. She is the eldest child in the family among another sister and youngest brother. Aok Sokunkanha is a Fine Art University graduate, her major is Khmer Traditional Dance. Her father whose name is Aok Bony, now lives in Australia, is a musician and her mother, In Sokun is now divorced still lives with her and her sister in Phnom Penh and is a female choreographer and teacher at the Royal Fine Art School. Her family used to be in poor condition, but better from day-to-day because of her best effort and career advancement. Part of the introduction for the interview with Yuk Chinda for CTN Channel 21, Aok Sokunkanha performed a beautiful solo Robam Chuen Por (Blessing Dance). Aok Sokunkanha now lives with her mother and her siblings in Phnom Penh, managing her beauty salon with her mother when she is free.
022-copy-14-217x300Aok Sokunkanha started her career since 1998, and she started to be the most famous female singer of Cambodia in 2010 until now. Young, talented, bright, hard working, pretty, gentle, well-educated – not to mention her ability to rock and roll, Aok Sokunkanha (Kanha) is all that! Then, you may wonder why this little girl is so right on track with what she is doing at a very young age and what made what she is today. In short, it is her determination and hard working. Of course she was born in a family deep-rooted in music but she is the one who made what she is today herself. Aok Sokunkanha started her career exploration in entertaining people since she was about 10 years old. While some girls still play dirt in Cambodia at her age, Aok Sokunkanha would go with her father who was a musician and sang along. She took any opportunity she could to show off her God-given talent on stage and not let go the microphone until she is now a professional singer. When it comes to her career path, it is very interesting to know that Aok Sokunkanha always likes music since she was young. Initially, her father didn’t know that she had the talent and he was surprised when he heard her singing behind the wall when he was teaching his students to sing. Then, he always took her with him when he and his music band performed. Sokunkanha’s father also wrote Rock music and song, so he wrote songs for her to sing. One day, when the singer of the band was absent, Aok Sokunkanha ruled the stage! In the documentary video clip, Aok Sokunkanha was just a little girl – 10 years old but she rocked the stage like a star. Her mother also liked to sing. Beside within with her father, sokunkanha and her mother always went to Ear Vathana’s house to sing Karaoke. Knowing there was a great potential for marketing opportunity, Ear Vathana who was later the producer of Reaksmey Stung Songke (RSK) production decided to create CD albums for her together with Kum Buna Deth, Yourk Thit Ratha, Sem Sang Vath and Bou Vichet in 1998. The name of the production at the time was EV Production – short for Ear Vathana – the producer’s name. Aok Sokunkanha worked for EV Production while studying Khmer Traditional Dance at Pumen Fine Art University. Sokunkanha participated in a signing contest sponsored by TVK with Yourk Thit Ratha. She did not receive any award from the contest. She said she was only 12 at the time and the age requirement was 15 and above. Later, Aok Sokunkanha participated in another singing contest called Pon Lok Dara (Emerging Stars) sponsored by TV5. Again, she did not get any award either. She said it was because she sang a Rock song written by her father while the Program required a slow song. After a few years, EV Production was disbanded. After she finished High School, she then sang for U2 Club at night and worked for Reaskmey Stung Songke (RSK) Production and going to school during day time. Aok Sokunkanha was more and more recognized for her style and unique voice by both young and middle-age generations.
A significant increase in her popularity occurred after she sang a song for a CTN movie called Snam Sne Samoth Rream (The Love of Ream Ocean). The movie was aired in the Country and overseas. Sokunkanha came to United States with Preap Sovath and You Disco early 2007. It was a great success for her in the US. More people began to know her. There was her performing in Milpitas, California. Many audiences were very impressed seeing a little girl like her rocking the stage – jumping up and down with her hair flying all over the place, captivating her audiences with style which was made many of young people had a great time.
Coming back from the US, she left U2 production due to the fact that it nearly went bankrupt and then she stepped in Sunday production in the name of a “Guest Singer”. According to the news article released by Everyday.com on June the 23, 2007, Aok Sokunkanha joined Sunday Production and worked with Mr. Rethy Dona who used to be her song composer when she was in U2. In Sunday production, she released two dance songs plus a solo album full of various kinds of singles making her fame more renowned. Leaving Sunday Production, she then became a guest singer again in Rock Center as well as Rock Production. She appeared in the first Khmer-made album by Rock Production with two songs, Motanakpheap Jiet Khmer and Besdong Rorng Krous. The last was a theme song of one Khmer movie – Besdong Rorng Krous – aired on CTN, which helped put more weight on her reputation.
11062335_10152848001915124_521592549869540839_nIn late 2007, Aok Sokunkanha decided to sign a five-year contract to be a dependent singer in Reaksmey Hangmeas production (HM) seeing she can show off all her talent there, especially when big concerts are set up. Of course, there she can do what she has always wished to though not really a hundred percent possible. Moving from one production to another does not really affect her popularity because her songs, styles, and attitude play vital roles. Being in HM, where she has produced lots of songs both traditional and modern, is all the same. Her popularity keeps going upward from day-to-day just like climbing stair. In mid July 2010, she had a chance to perform with Mr. Preap Sovath and Mr. Rethy Dona’s band once again at Australia, which was for the sake of Cambodian orphans via the Save Cambodian Children Fund Australia. First, she was not confident enough to gain support from Australian audiences, but things just contradicted to what she had thought. She was back to Cambodia with triumph. Having been at the above-mentioned entertainment productions, Aok Sokunkanha does not only have chances to present herself abroad but also throughout her home country, especially provinces via different sponsors.
Entering HM is not a chance just to show off her talent but to involve in things for the sake of the society as well. The talented singer started to know Somaly Mam Foundation and AFESHIP organization where those who are victims of human trafficking are saved and given vocational education. Often times, Aok Sokunkanha has joined activities to give hope and motivation to those people by visiting the foundation and organization, being a spokeswoman at HMFM, and attending annual social event held to fight against the illegal act. Not only does she take part alone, but she has also introduced the places and activities to HM, its stars, and others. What is more appreciable is that she has made the hook-up between HM and the organizations to have concerts so as to raise people’s awareness regarding human trafficking. By ways of all these activities, Aok Sokunkanha has been appointed a goodwill ambassador honored by the organizations at the Ministry of Women Affaires on the 7th of December 2010. Apart from this, she has also used her free time to be a guest in radios’ programs talking about HIV education among young people as well.
P1020191copyAok Sokunkanha has never turned her back to her graceful fans. She has always told in advance about her activities and schedule as well as joining fans’ meetings. She did not only join, but also played, gave meaningful speech, prepared gifts, especially showed laughs and intimate attitude towards the fans. Furthermore, she has been to a pagoda with some of the fans on the third of Pchum Ben’s Days so as to share merit altogether. The act of sharing merit together did not take part at only the pagoda but also at one old couple’s house. Aok Sokunkanha and her fans brought money and other goods to the house of the couple who used to be actor and actress owing to the fact that the couple was facing hardship in their daily living. Having spent time with fans on meeting, sharing merit, taking photos at the back of stages, and a lot more, the singer came up with a quote that “Love Aok Sokunkanha, must love study” because she wants her fans to be outstanding students and have gorgeous future.
218036_418108291570670_642911101_nIn 2007 Aok Sokunkanha, together with her mother, opened a beauty salon which her house at Phnom Penh Thmey was used as the shop. As it goes well, they both have decided to have it enlarged by adding more services related to wedding, which is known as Aok Sokunkanha’s Embellishment and Beauty Salon. As they want the shop to be more recognized and convenient for customers living in the centre of Phnom Penh city, they have came to a decision to change the shop which has more than something to do with wedding and that is Aok Sokunkanha’s Embellishment and Beauty Salon to the near Depo market.
Along with her music career and business, Aok Sokunkanha has been asked to be an advertiser of some products such as Suzuki Viva motorbike, magazines, kitchen supply, jewelry, and so on.
Aok SokunKanha told how she has struggled throughout her music career thus far till she has got enormous fame and recognition from people both in and out the country. Yearning to be an eminent singer is not a trouble-free stuff because she had crossed things just like storms, especially rumors and feeling of envy from others. However, those problems do not stop her from going on walking on the road of life as she has determined and said “Diamond is still Diamond”. When asked how she feels when she becomes a very successful and famous singer, Aok Sokunkanha responded in a delighted way that being very famous or not is not so important. What she really wants is to entertain the audience, especially dedicate her voice and performance through songs so as to accompany them when they are either happy or unhappy. As you expected, Aok Sokunkanha’s success story does not tell the whole story about her life. She does have up and down times just like we all do. Though it seems wonderful to have a life like her – making money doing what you like and be famous, Aok Sokunkanha mentioned in the interview that her freedom was held hostage by being not able to go any where she likes as a young girl. Being a celebrity or public icon like her, you are watched every step you move and have to live up to public’s views and opinions. She said in her own word that she has no happiness – “Kmean Sach Key Sok” (in Khmer). Living in a conservative society, a young girl like her can’t get away from tabloids and rumors about this and that, especially for a rising Khmer female Rock star. Her mother was almost in tears when she said about how difficult it was to deal with what people said about her daughter. Perhaps the most difficult time for her was when her father went away to live in Australia, leaving her mother, her sister and her in Cambodia.
11705142_957445494318759_3184920720701474743_nIn Sokun – Aok Sokunkanha’s Mother In spite of these rumors and issues, Aok Sokunkanha seems to handle and manage her life every well. She said when she sees her fans entertained with a smile on their face, she would forget all about her hardships and sorrows and want to do more to entertain her fans. Aok Sokunkanha cleared up the rumor about loving relationship with Rithy Dona that she had no loving relationship with him – it was just a friendship between her and Rithy Dona. In an article released by Everyday on 11/23/2004, Aok Sokunkanha had also cleared up the rumor about her plan to live in Australia because someone had proposed to her. She said though it was her father’s choice to live there, it was not her plan. She did not want to live overseas. She said someone did propose to her but she denied as she did not want to live overseas. She talked a lot about how good it was to live in Cambodia though her father and one of her aunts live in Australia. Her life in Cambodia with her mother is very fruitful and peaceful. Her beauty salon in Psar Depo in Phnom Doun Penh District seems to be doing very well.
Talking about her marriage, Aok Sokunkanha said she would wait for a few more years and she wouldn’t mind as to what her Mr. Right is as long as her parent are happy. However, she already rejected someone once before because he lived in Australia. So for those who live overseas and want to take a chance when the window of opportunity is opened, you may want to be prepared to answer the touch question if you want to go back and live with her in Cambodia. However, she may change her mind then if you are the man who can make her heart jumping up and down like her Hard Rock performance on stage. On the serious note, Angkorthom.US has a lot of respects and admirations for Aok Sokunkanha. She is an ideal Khmer girl who works every hard since she was young. She is a type of girl who knows exactly what she wants to do in life and she was able to make her dream come true for herself. She has great respects for her parents. Aok Sokunkanha has the least negative rumors so far among other Khmer female Rock stars in Khmer communities throughout the world. Angkorthom. US is more than happy to add her profile to their website. In conclusion, they would like to wish her the best of luck for her future.

Mr. Jimmy Kiss(Sarun Kalyan Background Interview

Mr. Jimmy Kiss(Sarun Kalyan Background Interview

Jimmy Kiss is a 28 year-old singer-songwriter from Phnom Penh. JACK DIAMOND spent a fascinating hour with Jimmy before his smash performance with Songkites at The Amazing Acoustic Picnic II. In his first full English-language interview, Jimmy talked about joining Dub Addiction; the lessons he has learned from his famous singing father; and why he is happy to be known as ‘The Wildman’ of the Cambodian music scene.
Jimmy Kiss - Baby I'm Sorry
Who is Jimmy Kiss?
I was born and live in Phnom Penh. However, I spend more time in the Cambodian jungle and other places around Cambodia than I do in Phnom Penh. I do a lot of travelling around Cambodia because I work as a tour leader. I take customers of the tour company around Cambodia. I often take foreigners from Laos, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap. The feeling I have when I am in the jungle, compared to being in the city, is so different. I am too young to live in the jungle now but if I have enough money from playing music I will go back to the jungle life and write songs.
Your hairstyle is quite different…
Most Cambodians don’t wear their hair long. I don’t understand why they don’t like curly hair because, as you may know, you can go to Angkor Wat and see lots of carvings that have curly hair like mine. If you go to the provinces then there are a lot of guys that have curly hair but I wear it long – so people say ‘you look different’. My father has the same hair.
Which area of Cambodia do you like to visit on your tours?
Kirirom Mountain. It is just 1.5 hours from Phnom Penh. Its on the border between Koh Kong and Kampong Speu provinces. It really is a beautiful place. I have made a lot of friends there. Most of the people who live around the top of the mountain were Khmer Rouge. It is not so far from Phnom Penh but most Cambodian people are scared of the jungle. However, I believe it is just so beautiful. The most important thing is you have to be friends with the people you meet there.
When people think about Kiriom mountain it is usually about the Cham Bok community or about the waterfall and pine trees. However, when I arrived there I met a Khmer Rouge family and we became friends – probably because I brought my small ukulele. I asked them a lot about their land and their home and, as such, we found a lot of beautiful places which other people don’t know about. When people go to Kirirom they just go to the pagoda and the waterfall but there are also some places there called Jerooa P’dat Chivet and Tmor Loy – they are so beautiful. We also found a place called L’ang Cheeum D’ap – ‘bleeding cave’. There is a lot of blood on the stones.
I want all the schools in Cambodia to give students the opportunity to spend more time in the jungle and to not feel so scared when they are there.. I want the students to love the music of the birds and the trees and to learn how beautiful life is next to the jungle.
When you sleep in the jungle, the sounds that you never hear in Phnom Penh will appear to your ear. Relaxing sounds, meditation sounds. That’s why I like to stay in the jungle more than Phnom Penh because it helps create my songs. I usually take a small ukulele and when I get there I forget everything about Phnom Penh. There are good smells, beautiful views, the feeling of smiling faces around you and this creates a good environment for writing new songs. There are so many sounds of birds in the jungle and they are all so different. These sounds make music in your brain automatically. The sound of an animal [makes animal sound] becomes… [sings] ‘Baby I’m Sorry’.
Can you remember the first song you wrote?
‘Jom-riang Thmei Jam Srey Vilvinh’ – It means ‘A New Song is Waiting for You When You Come Back’. I was a Christian, I was in a church and a team of people from Singapore came to meet us. It was the first time for me to see a foreigner. Then a spirit came into my brain, it was the first time I made a new song. I made that song and I thought ‘I hope she’s coming back’ then I will show the song to her – but she never came back ! I was around 19 or 20 years old. I’m 28 years old now. I have loved singing since I was a very small child.
My father was a very famous singer before the Khmer Rouge period. Unfortunately, he had to burn all his albums and photos and throw them in the river. He did this to protect his life. If they had known that he was a famous singer then they would have killed him. So he cut off his hair and made his skin very dirty and no-one knew he was a famous singer. He’s still alive today. Now he is 62 years old. I think people of his age will know him well. His name is Vor Sarun. ‘Bontorng Ksaey Ko Sak Seiy’, that’s his song. Also a very famous one is ‘Maxi Songha’.
It’s hard for me to understand his life. Some television channels ask him to perform and some bands ask him to join them but it seems that he just wants to be a farmer. He lives on the Kirirom mountain and has a farm. He enjoys working with his tractor and his cow. He enjoys that life. Maybe it is the Pol Pot period that made him feel that way. He used to be a very famous singer but after the Pol Pot period he changed a lot. Most of his friends and his band were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Maybe this broke his heart. He still likes singing and he taught me a lot about how to do it. He also taught me a lot about how to be a good person for Cambodia, but he doesn’t care much for singing in public any more – for me I love it. I have to do it!
Jimmy’s Father, Vor Sarun
My father taught me how to sing and he showed me ‘the feeling of the singer’. He said it’s very important to put real soul into the song. Sometimes if you lose your confidence on stage then the song is not your song at all – it becomes something else. The most important thing is that you have to put the real story into your soul and then you feel that ‘oh, it’s my problem’ and then your heart beats at the right speed. Sometimes I cry when I sing. I use emotion – it’s very important.
I have played music for 6 years. The most amazing time for me on stage was the first time I sung with Bobby Michaels [American Gospel singing star, did a lot of Christian ‘Musicianary’ work in Cambodia and Asia up until his death in March 2009]. It was at a concert for Khmer for Crisis. I sang a song called You Raise Me Up. I was very nervous as this was the first time I had ever sang in front of an audience. Bobby told me to take a deep breath and hold it and then I would feel confident. It worked! It was the an amazing because, for the first time in my life, I could sing with love inside my heart and have confidence on stage.
Bobby Michaels
Also, I used to sing with Philippe Javelle at the Topaz Restaurant. I would sing my own original songs, Sinn Sisamouth songs, and Western songs with him. We would sing about ten songs per day then I would go home. My father also taught me Western songs. ‘If you want to be a famous singer then you have to learn Hotel California’. If I sing that song then I have to make sure that I have had enough sleep and done enough exercise. There is not much space for breathing in that song.
When I see you sing, it’s like watching an Opera singer, you sing with your whole body, very loud. You start by holding the microphone next to your stomach, then bring it up to your mouth and throw your head back. Most singers haven’t got that kind of power…
I also need to make sure I get enough sleep and exercise on the day of a performance. This is very important for a singer. When you exercise you make your lungs bigger and stronger. You have to be bigger than the song. ‘Baby I’m Sorry’ is a difficult song because it has high notes. I have to practice so that I feel that I can reach the notes. If we do a lot of preparation like this then it is easier to sing. You have to be more than the song and then you can control the song. You can do more because your lungs are bigger. I will feel scared if I don’t sleep enough the night before the performance. I have to do exercise like Bobby Michaels taught me – take a breath and hold it for a long time. Then I feel good and confident.

Push-ups are good idea – doing push-ups and taking long breaths. Then you hold it and come down again. You make your lungs bigger and stronger. When we sing, we also need to know where is our sound? In Cambodia we call it the ‘ghost sound’ and ‘original sound’. Ghost sound is high and original sound is like speaking. When you find it you can make original sound and ghost sound together. It’s not easy.
Tell me more about the Songkites project…
Philippe told me about Songkites. I then went to have interview and I became a member. There are ten members of Songkites and we meet once or twice a week to make a workshop and brainstorm. It’s very important to see each other once per week. It’s been going around 3 months. I love Songkites so much – it’s like we are a family. They offer a lot of experience to Khmer people. I know how to make a song but I don’t have much experience. As you may know, we don’t have a lot of good quality of musicians in Cambodia because of the Khmer Rouge period. So the people involved – Euan Gray, Charlie Corrie, Philippe and Sebastien [Adnot] use Songkites to help with this problem. I have gained a lot of experience from what they have told me. What they bring for Cambodian people is the real thing.
Songkites has given me a lot of motivation for new songs. The songs come to me like a storm. I have written around 30 of my own songs, but, for now, I have only performed to people around fifteen songs. For New Song Production I gave them about ten songs. People use them for recordings. It seems that trying to sell new songs does not meet with a lot of success – maybe Cambodians like cover songs.
I write songs not only for Songkites but also for other organisations. For example, I am also a freelance artist manager at JTone Productions. I also made a movie called Kon Dap Dia Krung Pas Jong Kung Jun Na Bot. It was released around 3 months ago. I am also a Bokator [Cambodian Boxing] student. I was a boxer for about one year but I did not do this on television because my family did not like it. Generally I just went to the provinces to fight.
Can you see yourself as a star?
I can say that this is my dream. I want to show Cambodia to the world. I really want to be a Cambodian star – but a Cambodian star that can show Cambodian style to people outside Cambodia. I’ve been around my own country and I have found a lot of beautiful things and that’s why I want to be a famous singer. I want to share these beautiful things with the world. Cambodian instruments like the Chapei, for example. Life is not long. Before I die I hope I can do something for my country.
How did the Dub Addiction collaboration happen?
I like that kind of music so much but I had never had experience with it before. Sebastien and Jan [Mueller] called me to join the band and it was like ‘wow!’ Surprising, exciting. I like it. We just started right around the same time as Songkites. Sebastien was helping Songkites by playing bass. We talked with each other and then we made a song together. They had already made some very beautiful music and they asked me if I could do something. I just took the microphone, closed my eyes and said ‘let me use my soul’. The music happened to me. I put the new melody to it and lyrics at the same time. They said ‘Wow! You can do it… can you join the band?’
I do sing traditional music also. I try a traditional style with Dub Addiction. Traditional music is not only wedding music but also Sinn Sisamouth songs. Sinn Sisamouth used to put a lot of traditional instruments in his songs. Sinn Sisamouth would sing the Khmer Oeurn style – it means the style of going up and down [in tone]. Jror Lorng Sek Meas is my favourite song – it is so beautiful. Sinn Sisamouth mixes the Khmer instruments with the Khmer singing style. Like monks, we sometimes don’t need instruments – it is beautiful just with singing.
My father said the most important thing is knowing what we are singing. If you are Khmer you have to know your Khmer style and then when you mix it with western style it will sound like something interesting. Now, with Dub Addiction, for the first time I am mixing Khmer style with a western style. My first dream has been realised!
Jimmy Kiss plays Slur Bar with Dub Addiction on Friday the 21st February, together with Wat A Gwaan and headliners Reggae Rajahs. On Saturday 1st March Jimmy performs at ‘Big Folk’ music festival at Doors Phnom Penh. See more of the ‘Wildman’ at the Songkites album launch concert later in March (stay tuned to Leng Pleng for details).

15 things to say to your mom while you still have the chance

  • Every time a child is born, so is a mother. Although we do not have an instructional manual for life, we are each given special women to guide us, help us through our challenges and cheer us on when we succeed. This video's message is the perfect tribute to mothers everywhere and reminds us to not take ours for granted.
My mother lived with a chronic illness, but the sickness that took her away from me was quick and unexpected. I always told my mom I loved her, but in the years since her death, I often think of other things I wish I'd said to her. Sometimes, "I love you" can't convey what your mother means to you. Here are 15 things to say to your mom this Mother's Day.
  • 1. You're beautiful

Women never tire of hearing this, yet somehow never believe it.
  • 2. Thank you

You can never say this enough. The list of things moms do for you is endless.
  • 3. Can you write that down?

From household tips to family stories, the list of things my mom told me, that I've now forgotten, is huge. I wish I'd thought to ask her to write it down.
  • 4. What is your recipe for potato salad?

No one makes it quite like mom. You will crave it, your family will ask you for it, so make sure her signature recipe is handed down in writing.
  • 5. Tell me about the day I was born, again

Hearing the story, you can't help but feel like the most wonderful thing to ever come into your mom's life. When your mom is gone, you'll want to remember every detail.
  • 6. Let's just sit and talk

Enjoy the time you have together. Take the time to get to know her as a person and not just your mom. Ask about her friends, her hobbies, things she's done and things she'd like to do. Let her know she's worth your time and attention.
  • 7. How old was I when ... ?

Mom is practically the only source for knowledge of your milestones. Dads only seem to remember the events, not the time frame.
  • 8. Let me do the dishes

A dish-free evening is one of the most appreciated gifts you'll ever give to a mother. She'll get up from the table with a weight lifted from her shoulders.
  • 9. I'm sorry

Over the years, you'll inconvenience your mom, disobey her, embarrass her and even hurt her. It's a good thing to acknowledge her patience and unconditional love.
  • 10. I forgive you

Over the years, your mom will inconvenience you, embarrass you and even hurt you. Let her know you love her anyway.
  • 11. What can I do for you?

You can't count the things your mom has done for you. Look for something you can do to lighten her load and lift her heart. Don't take "no" for an answer.
  • 12. I admire the way you ..

Moms like to be heroes, too. Let her know you notice and value the way she lives her life. Thank her for specific lessons she has taught.
  • 13. May I have a hug?

Don't shy away from physical affection. No one will ever hold you like your mother.
  • 14. You're the best mom in the world

She may protest, but every mother wants to think you believe it.
  • 15. I love you, no matter what

In the end, moms are just like us. They want to know love is all embracing and unconditional.
